Chair holder

Full Professor in the Department of Geomatics Sciences, Université Laval

Mir Abolfazl Mostafavi is a full professor in the Department of Geomatics and holds the Canada Research Chair in Senseable Cities for Empowered Mobility (CRC-CRSNG, Level 1). He is a research member of two recognized research centers at Université Laval: the Research center in data and spatial intelligence (CRDIG) and the Interdiplinary research center interdisciplinaire in rehabilitation and social integration (Cirris). He is also a research member of the Institute for Environment, Development and Society (EDS) and the Institute for Data and Intelligence (IID), as well as a collaborating member of the Institute on Aging and Social Participation of Seniors (IVPSA) and a research member of Université Laval's Living Lab MDA-MA.

Professor Mostafavi is actively involved in various local, regional, national and international research collaborations. In particular, he was Director of the CRDIG (formerly the Research center in Geomatics (CRG)) from 2010 to 2016 and a founding member and Director of the Convergence network from 2014 to 2019, aimed at stimulating partnership research in the field of geomatics. He has led numerous interdisciplinary research projects, including the MobiliSIG project, and founded two cutting-edge research laboratories: the REGARD laboratory in 2006 and the Intelligent and Inclusive Mobility laboratory in 2021.

He also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Geomatica journal of the Canadian Institute of Geomatics (CIG/CIG) from 2017 to 2022, as well as President of the CIG from 2021 to 2023. Internationally, he has contributed, among other things, as chair and co-chair to various working groups of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) on dynamic and multidimensional spatial modeling, semantics and ontology of geographic information. He is currently co-chairman of an ISPRS working group on digital twins applied to mobility and urban navigation.

Research interest

His research interests focus on geospatial theories, methods and technologies to address the complex issues of human interactions with physical, social and technological environments in the era of smart, liveable and inclusive cities and mobility, following an ecosystem approach.

His work falls into three complementary areas of research:

  • Conducting research into the design and development of smart, inclusive environments using new information and telecommunications methods and technologies, including sensor networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins and geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoIA).
  • Study, measure and understand human interactions with their physical, social and technological environments in an ecosystem approach. Spatial cognition, embodiment and interactional modeling are at the heart of these research activities.
  • Contribute to the design and development of technological mobility assistance solutions adapted to the needs of people with disabilities and the elderly, according to their profiles, perceptions, abilities and preferences, following the principles of social innovation.
