MobiliSIG
MobiliSIG is a project aiming to offer manual wheelchair users with accessible routes. It relies on user confidence to face obstacles and data collected on the field to compute accessibles routes.
According to Health Canada, over 3,300,000 Canadians have a disability. In the province of Quebec alone, there are more than 125,000 people living with a physical disability and having to use a wheelchair. For the vast majority of these people, the ability to move around independently is essential to their daily activities and to fulfilling their social commitments. However, their mobility is affected not only by their disability, but also by the various obstacles in their environment.
MobiliSIG is a research project which mobilizes researchers and students from various backgrounds with the aim of offering wheelchair users adapted routes. A smartphone application and an online planner offer to define and navigate accessible routes, personalized according to the user's level of confidence in facing certain obstacles.
A great deal of research has already been carried out, with the active participation of the Institut de Réadaptation en Déficience Physique de Québec (IRDPQ) and the City of Quebec, to develop a first version of the project.
In order to improve this project, research is currently underway to:
- integrate public transport into route calculation
- offer adapted and personalized navigation instructions
- take into account environmental landmarks to facilitate navigation
- integrate temporary obstacles (snow, road construction ...)
