Urban furniture in St Roch

Quebec City's St Roch district has a large elderly population, but few facilities are available for pedestrians. This project explores innovative ways of encouraging the elderly to walk.

The Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) is offering a program (called Engagement) that places citizens unfamiliar with the research environment at the heart of the scientific process, and invites Quebec researchers to develop innovative citizen research and participatory science practices. This is how Prof. Krista Best, a professor in the Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Mir Mostafavi, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Senseable cities for empowered mobilities, got together with Mr. Robert Rousse, a citizen living in the St-Roch district of Quebec City, to answer his question: How can adapting urban furniture for people with mobility issues improve accessibility and active participation?

Through this co-construction project, the aim is to identify, within the scientific literature and among the local community, design ideas capable of improving the daily lives of pedestrians in the St-Roch district. These ideas will open up new avenues for proposing concrete solutions in the field, which can then be evaluated by research and citizens alike.
